In or out of the EU: what do you think?
According to market research, online surveys and telephone polls the UK is currently fairly evenly split over the prospect of voting to remain in or to leave the EU in the upcoming referendum on 23rd of June. On the big day, all over 18s who are registered to vote in the UK will be asked the question: "Should the United Kingdom remain a member of the European Union or leave the European Union?" The official options will be 'Remain a member of the European Union' and 'Leave the European Union' respectively. Online polls are currently showing the split as being pretty much neck and neck in England, but surveys suggest that voters in Scotland and Northern Ireland are more strongly in favour of remaining in the EU, as well as in Wales but with a lower margin.
So what does this mean for the UK? As well as dividing opinion amongst the general public, geographical regions and notable figures, it also divides MPs – with half of Conservative MPs, including five cabinet ministers, several Labour MPs, UKIP and the DUP having spoken up as being in favour of leaving, whilst most Labour Party, SNP, Plaid Cymru and Lib Dem MPs are generally considered keen to stay in. The Prime Minister has also recently announced that he is only in favour of staying in the EU on the condition that his proposed changes agreement is upheld.
When surveyed, voters of the ‘Out’ campaign say that the UK is being held back by the EU, with too many business rules and high membership fees, plus the inability to control our borders. The ‘In’ campaign mentions vital trade deals, safety in the EU group, good international relations and the benefits of immigration as positive reasons why we should stay in.
The BBC recently published an article outlining the main points for and against staying in the EU. It’s safe to say that many people also have a gut reaction to wanting to stay in or to leave, which is something facts and figures cannot always account for – and for which polling doesn’t always show.
